Support Life

Recently the Supreme Court issued an opinion which overturned the controversial 1973 decision in Roe vs. Wade, which gave women the constitutional right to abortion. This 2022 opinion gives the decision back to each state to determine the legality of abortion. While some states now have a ban on abortion, others are working to expand access to abortion, and many states fall somewhere in between.

I want to be clear upfront and say that I am 100% pro-life! I would love to live in a world in which abortion were unthinkable. But no matter which side of this great debate you fall on, I hope we can all agree that supporting life is a good thing!

Life.

For you formed my inward parts;

    you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Wonderful are your works;

    my soul knows it very well.

My frame was not hidden from you,

when I was being made in secret,

    intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed substance;

in your book were written, every one of them,

    the days that were formed for me,

    when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139:13-16

Believers that hold to a high view of Scripture (which we do at The Strong Home!) believe that the Bible is inerrant and infallible. This means that the Bible has no errors and it is incapable of being wrong. So when we read a passage of Scripture like Psalm 139, we understand this to be the very word of God through the pen of David. The truth we find here is useful for teaching, rebuke, correction, and training in righteousness, according to 2 TImothy 3:16. So let’s get to teaching and training!

When we read Psalm 139 in light of current events, we understand that abortion is an intentional interruption of God’s work in the womb. Psalm 139 tells us that God is actively forming and knitting and making and weaving and writing life in the womb. But does his activity stop once a baby is born? Absolutely not! Romans 8:28 tells us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” God is always working in our lives.

#supportlife

Because we know that God loves life, we should do everything we can to love and support life too! Christians often get a bad rap for fighting for the rights of the unborn, but failing to support life outside the womb. What a joke! For centuries, Christians are the ones who have been working at pregnancy centers, serving as foster parents, adopting children, running hospitals, volunteering at prisons, starting support groups and a whole host of other life-supporting ministries! But if you find yourself falling into the category of being pro-life in theory but not in reality, I’ve got some great help for you.

For the next 31 days at The Strong Home, I’ll be giving you ideas of ways you can actively support life no matter where you are. There are so many practical ways that we can show love to single moms, teen moms, foster families, adoptive families, and more. I’ll be focusing mostly on moms, infants, and kids, in light of this recent Supreme Court ruling, but this list could certainly be extended to include immigrants, refugees, teenagers, adults, and more. My hope is that you will use what you read here as a springboard to support life at all ages and stages. Find a new way to #supportlife every day in July on the socials – Facebook and Instagram!
