5 Worst Places to Build Your Theology

1. The Internet. I know, I know, this blog is on the internet! But I will never ever ask you to take my word for anything. I will always point you to open your Bible and check to see if what I say is true. The worst thing you can do is take the click-bait articles on your facebook feed as gospel truth. If your time in Scripture consists of memes with ethereal backgrounds, you’re in the wrong place. Anybody can make up anything they want and put it on the internet. Don’t fall for that junk! Any website that doesn’t encourage you to open your own Bible for Truth is not one you should be spending time on.

2. Devotional Books. Most of the time devotional books can be really encouraging. There’s definitely a place for them. But if you are using a devotional book in place of Scripture, you’re in the wrong place! If you read the one-liner Scripture printed at the top of the page and count that as your Bible reading for the day, you’re being deceived into thinking that’s enough to feed your soul.

3. TV. Now, I know this is probably a no-brainer, but I’ve seen several really popular tv shows try to tackle spiritual issues lately. Let’s just make it a rule not to get our theology from tv shows, mmmk?

4. Walmart. The one thing you can’t get at Walmart: theology.

5. At home alone. This one’s tricky. God speaks through His Word and He will certainly speak to you at home alone. However, when it comes to developing a sound theology, you really need other people. You need some solid teachers (stay tuned on how to check if a teacher is solid or shaky) and you need some people who are seeking to build a strong theology for themselves alongside you. I’m just gonna say it – you need the Church! So many people these days think that watching a live-stream of their favorite preacher is sufficient to check off the church attendance box. And I guess if there really were a church attendance box to check, that would probably do it. But the thing is, there’s not! The purpose of gathering with the Church is not to check off a box; the purpose of the Church is to build one another up, to stir each other up to love and good works, to encourage each other and to stand firm on good theology! Don’t try to go it alone.
