Ten Hawaiian Surprises

  1. Trade winds make me happy. No trade winds make me grouchy.
  2. There are phone booths everywhere. I’m not sure why because I’ve never seen anyone using one.
  3. Our neighborhood is SO quiet. And everyone has their windows open, which means that I’m pretty sure my LOUD TEXAS FAMILY is making quite an impression.
  4. School gets out really early every day here. 2:15 is regular dismissal at the elementary. High School dismisses at 1:00 twice a week. And yet the schools are ranked WAY higher than Gonzales schools in a national ranking. I’m intrigued.
  5. Speaking of schools, the Hawaii public schools I’ve been exposed to are leaps and bounds ahead of the Texas public schools I’ve had experience with. It’s obviously not Texas teachers’ fault – the system is broken. I was not expecting Hawaii public schools to be this far ahead.
  6. There are no dress codes at school. Flip-flops (aka slippers), crop tops and bikinis are all A-OK. This is new to me.
  7. I haven’t gotten over the beauty of creation here yet. I hope I never do.
  8. A package of 20 tortillas can be $9.99! It’s a good thing we know how to make our own. Groceries here are super expensive!
  9. My life here is very urban. A trip to Target means a parking garage. I can see high rises out my living room window.
  10. No matter where you go, there you are. This didn’t really surprise me, but it’s something that strikes me every time I think about it. We’re the same old Texan Irvings, we’re just living in Hawaii now!
